Dietary deficiency caused by insufficient protein intake; common in children one to three years of age in less developed countries. Characterized by growth retardation, wasting of muscles in limbs, and accumulation of fluids in the body, especially in feet, legs, hands, and face.

A widespread human protein deficiency disease resulting from a starchy diet tow in protein and essential amino acids.
